Quick tip: Story retell

I really enjoy using stories in class.  Many times, I ask students to retell or summarize the story.  Each time, the students either give wayyyy too much information (the whole story practically) or too little information (2 facts from the story.)  I think these five finger retells would be a great idea.  The students could outline their hand on a piece of paper and include the information of who, where, beginning, middle and end.  (Many Middle School students love outlining their hands!)  You could even combine who and where then add a surprise twist.  I would use this as a think, pair, share activity.  It gives students time to process the information first, and then they could see how others summarized the information.
